JAMES CAAN CALLS FOR INVESTORS TO HELP BEAT CANCER
BUSINESS entrepreneur James Caan is backing a new initiative that will propel forward the use of personalised medicine for people with cancer.
The former Dragon is working with Cancer Research UK on a project called The Catalyst Club, which aims to raise £10 million over three years to drive forward new scientific advances which will make it possible to match cancer patients to the most appropriate treatment based on their genetic makeup and that of their cancer.
Of the money raised, £4.5 million will go towards the complete genetic mapping of oesophageal cancer - a project that has been announced today (Thursday 14th July) as part of the International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC).
Commenting on the project and his support of Cancer Research UK, Patron of The Catalyst Club, James Caan, said:
“I’m really excited about The Catalyst Club and its ability to support this incredibly important step forward in cancer treatment. By looking into the genetics of cancer, scientists can make personalised treatment a reality and potentially transform people’s lives.
“The funds raised by The Catalyst Club will help develop new ways of understanding and treating cancer which will help improve survival rates. We are on the brink of an exciting new era and I hope people will join me in becoming a catalyst for remarkable change.”
Harpal Kumar, Cancer Research UK’s chief executive, said:
“We’re delighted that James Caan has come on board as patron for Cancer Research UK’s Catalyst Club which will fund pioneering and groundbreaking initiatives to help us understand the link between different genes and cancer.
“With James’ support, we hope to secure a group of investors who can make a significant contribution towards our life saving research.
“It is thanks to the generosity and support of our donors that we are able to maximise the chances of cure for patients and transform the landscape of cancer treatment for the future.”
The Catalyst Club is a new way for Cancer Research UK supporters to come together, make things happen at the very cutting edge of science and make a significant contribution towards the charity’s vision of beating cancer.
