The vast majority of people end up in their job because it matches their skillset, or because of the circumstances they experience. But the number of people who actively pursue the job they dream of is very small.

There are plenty of reasons for this; the fear of starting something new, and a lack of self-belief are among the most common. However, whatever reasons are behind you not going after your dream job, it is never too late to start pursuing it. For most, it is not easy to land their dream job. However, those that do tend to have similar qualities and characteristics. 1. An Optimistic attitude

This is evident, but it is essential to keep up a positive attitude. Everyone goes through stumbling blocks that can breed negativity, but having a positive outlook when problems arise up is a key skill to possess in personal and work life. Employers are far less likely to ignore if you if they see an applicant with a positive attitude. According to Forbes, optimistic employees are 130% more inspired to give their best at work. If you can stay positive, you’ll stand out and employers will notice.

2. Planning

The minute you realize your dream job, you need to start preparing, whether that be for the qualifications you need, the experience the job requires or the interview for the position. You need to make it clear to employers how your experience, education, and frame of mind meet the requirements of your dream job, and give it everything you have to make sure you are the most suitable candidate for the role.

3. Self-awareness

Knowing what you are good at and what you need to improve on is a huge step to realizing your ideal career. Self-awareness will help you to realize what is sustainable for you, what your definition of success looks like, and where work fits into your overall life, which will help you to pinpoint what your perfect job looks like. Self-awareness also comes into action if your dream career involves managing people, as a self-aware leader is an innovative, sustainable leader, and one that gets the best results.

4. Communication skills

Communicating clearly with a possible employer is essential. It’s difficult to convince someone of your passion if you cannot convey it effectively. Have a think if there’s anything you do that could potentially hinder successful communication and ensure you try to correct it. When applying for your dream job, communication may start with something as simple as making a phone call to the employer. At an interview, you want to discuss your values and what you can contribute, giving actual instances of when you have done so in the past. The International Association of communication UK states that companies that perform highly always keep communication simple and jargon-free. Make sure you come across clearly and intelligently, without overcomplicating the subject matter.

5. Courage

Having the courage to leave your comfort zone and try things you know little or nothing about can be terrifying, but it is necessary to land a dream job. Have the courage to step out into a new place, try new roles, knock on doors, and go after your dream.
